Goodbye from WhatIs.com founder Lowell Thing

 Dear Reader,

It's time for this editor to say good-bye! It all started as a rainy day musing about how many hypertext links you could get on one Web page. Well (I said to myself), what would a Web page look like covered entirely with just words, each of which was a hyperlink to...what? Well, perhaps a definition of that word? Why not? It was the simplest kind of idea, sketched out on a napkin at a time (1995) when the Web was young and a lot of other people were sketching out ideas on napkins. Many of these ideas flourished, then disappeared. Whatis.com survived for the simplest kind of reason. It was useful (I still use it myself).

And also because another small company called TechTarget saw how Whatis could fit into a larger purpose: providing IT professionals with information they need to do their jobs -- not just definitions, but news, white papers, newsletters (this is one of them), expert commentary, Webcasts, print magazines, conferences, even podcasts about new technologies you can learn about while driving to work.

Where do we go from here? As my final act of editorship, I'd like to ask you for your help one more time (over the years, many of you have already let us know when we needed correction or change). Would you take a few minutes to let us know how we can help you be a better IT professional? Or just be "better." If you could reply to this newsletter with answers to any or all of my last ten questions, my worthy successors will do their utmost to change Whatis.com for the better.

I'd like to thank all of you for your encouragement and guidance over the past ten years. I'll miss reading your mail. I'll miss everyone at TechTarget, but particularly Peggy Rouse and Ivy Wigmore, whose creative minds have been the soul of this site for the past few years.

It's time to move on, time to sketch out a new idea or two. So long and thanks again!

Lowell Thing
