Time Zone RegistryThe Time Zone Registry is an ongoing development project at the Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium (CalConnect) to provide a global registry of time zones and a time zone service. The purpose of the project is to make applications and services that handle calendaring and scheduling data more transparent and interoperable. To this end, the project will create a reliable list of times zones and associated rules so that applications and services need no longer rely upon unknown time zones, or time zones with identical time zone identifiers (TZIDs) but different rules. Creation of the time zone registry should also provide a consistent way to update time zone information and all related data (such as recurring meetings created prior to the update) efficiently and correctly. A completely standardized set of time zones enables times zones to be used by reference rather than by value (using only the TZID instead of the TZID plus its set of associated rules). This capacity can help applications work more efficiently on mobile devices, where bandwidth is at a premium. Standardized time zones also makes time keeping easier for operating systems, time sensitive applications, such as databases and reservation systems, and any software that uses time stamps to help create unique object identifiers.
