reagentA reagent is a chemical substance that is used to create a reaction in combination with some other substance. For example, Small Particle Reagent (SPR), a suspension of molybdenedisulfide powder in a detergent solution, is used for fingerprint detection on wet, oily, or dirty surfaces which may be unsuitable for other methods. The powder particles cling to the lipids in a fingerprint, thus rendering the fingerprint visible. Grey prints appear that can then be lifted from the surface with tape.
